Service - Room
Connect San Diego - Fall 2023
The first semi-permanent installation I had the opportunity to create was in this 10’ x 10’ room located inside Connect San Diego in North Park. I had set the intention earlier that year to find space where an installation could live long term and people could come in anytime to experience it..
This project was a challenge to myself both from a creative and technical perspective. I wanted to learn what was needed to create a semi-permanent piece completely on my own. This included network design in TouchDesigner, LED control, power distribution, system prep and lots of soldering to create custom cables. I also composed the music, programmed the lighting and did a little bit or Arduino programming.
When entering the room, viewers were greeted with subtle light from the LEDs in the corners around the floor and an enticing big red button. Mashing the button triggered the 6:00 sound and light sequence.
The name “SERVICE” came later in the creative process. I won’t say there was a deep meaning that drove the creation.. The process of making this piece and the experience it would deliver felt like an act of service to viewers. There was also an element of self reflection if felt it delivered. A personal mass or service of sorts. With my mom passing earlier that year, and my families experience at her service, this word was heavy on my mind. There may have been some channeling of her in the creation of this piece. My mom lived and breathed creativity like it was her life blood. I’ve taken that passion with me in my own life thanks to her encouragement.
