Writing an artist statement is not my strong suit.
I’d guess you didn’t come here to muse over my writing skills. If you’ve made it to this ‘About’ section, I suppose I should tell you why I make the things I make. If you were expecting some profound thoughts here, I’m sorry to disappoint. Words aren’t my strong suit. I figure it’s better to be authentic to who I am at this point in my life. Because when we meet in person, this is what you can expect from me in conversation. I don’t want to pretend like I have some deep meaningful insights about art. I just like making cool shit and working with great folks.
I like surprising people. I like providing unexpected moments. I like making people smile and say “wow”. I like creating unique environments. I’m fascinated by user experience as it relates to walking into a space or interacting with a piece of art. I love marrying visuals to sound. I like composing music and listening to dope beats that make my head nod. I like moving light around in a space and how it changes how you feel. I like experiencing something incredible with a group or a crowd. I like learning new things and using technology to solve creative challenges. I like building things and working with other creative people.
If you’re looking for a little more meat and potatoes around my experience, here’s some specifics. I’m a self-taught designer/developer. I’ve been in the creative space for 30 years as an entrepreneur and an artist. I’ve built and run my own companies in the digital space for web and software empowering other creatives. I’ve lead teams from 1-30.
I’ve been using TouchDesigner since before it was on Mac’s. I started taking it seriously around 2017. I used to VJ and do live video projections in the late 90’s and early 2000’s. I built interactive Flash websites for movies when Flash was cool. I then used it to build my first app with for iPad (yeah, that was a thing). I helped Resolume and ArKaos in the early 2000’s build in support for Flash in order to create modifiable visuals. It never caught on but I’m proud to have helped.
I like working with LED’s and DMX lighting for the creative limitations they provide. I like connecting things and getting them to work together and make magic. I came up with my own technique for easily running pixel mapped visuals to sound with 2D images made in vector. I’m currently learning Unreal Engine for pre-visualizations and realtime performance. I like solving problems.
So that’s me in a nutshell. If you’ve got a project in the works and looking to collaborate, let’s chat. I’m always up for meeting new folks and good conversation. Or if you see anything you like here, let’s set it up at your next event/gallery/festival/show. I look forward to hearing from you. ✌️
